Shaving her head started off as a joke but the more girls Anya saw shaving their heads, the more appealing the idea was to her so she decided to consult her Aunt to see what she should do...
Anya, introverted but determined. No one ever expected her to do something this drastic, but when she puts her mind to something no one’s opinion can stop her. Coming from a Chinese household, being a masculine female wasn’t something that was typical. However, her aunt was someone who broke those typical standards and someone that inspired Anya to do the same.
This is someone Anya truly admires and looks up to and considering her aunt has shaved her head before, she knew that this was the perfect person to go to for advice. After confiding in her, Anya decided to take a leap of faith and finally do it.
After shaving her head, Anya initially did miss her hair because over the years she had formed an attachment to it but eventually, one day at a time, she came to terms with her decision and she doesn’t regret it at all. “It was definitely something new but it felt really cool to do it.” She says. She wasn’t ready for the reaction she got from the people in her life.
Anya goes to a school where being a masculine female is not viewed as normal so she was taken by surprise with the positive reaction of her peers. They really liked her new look and were very supportive of it despite her initial belief that people would be weirded out by her freshly shaved hair.
Her newly shaven head along with her baggy clothes allows Anya to fully embrace her identity and look the way she’s always imagined for herself. A female who isn’t feminine. This new look showcases what Anya is normally too reserved to show. Her style is so important since it exhibits qualities people don’t get to see due to Anya’s “ resting bitch face”, as she calls it. She doesn’t look approachable, which is why it often takes awhile to gain friends. Anya’s decision to change her hairstyle was a step in the right direction on her path to self discovery.
This experience was monumental for Anya considering she’s an introverted person and doesn’t usually try things this bold. Shaving her head was a form of expression for Anya. Her hair and clothes speak for the things she’s too shy to say. Anya wants to design magazines in the future, so in order to achieve that she’s taking steps such as being featured on Naguzine, as a way to put herself out there. And it all started with shaving her head.
